HOW TO SECURE THE JOB DURING AND FOLLOWING THE INTERVIEW:

Properly preparing yourself for an interview is crucial. The more you prepare the more confident and informed you will be, increasing your chances of creating a good impression. It is vital that your first impression leaves the interviewer feeling positive about you. In some cases it's the only opportunity you will have to impress the interviewer with your knowledge and skills, so make the most of it. There are no second chances.

Some of the most important things to remember are:

Before the Interview

  • Research and understand the company culture, their products/services and just as important – their competition
  • Re-check the job requirements. Become familiar with the requirements of your potential employer
  • Prepare your answers to anticipated questions. You know the job requirements so think of other questions which may be asked about you such as your ideas, opinions and general interests.
  • Be sure you know the exact location of the interview and where to report when you arrive
  • Dress in professional business attire

At The Interview

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early so that you have time to relax and focus on preparing your thoughts for the interview
  • Have all paperwork that may be required professionally contained in a letter size folio with paper and pen for taking notes
  • Greet the employer with eye-to-eye contact and a firm handshake
  • Maintain good posture and grammar during the interview
  • Try not to display any signs of nervousness. Always be confident and positive and be clear and concise in your answers to questions.
  • Giving professional "examples” to answer questions demonstrates to the employer that you have successfully handled similar tasks and/or situations relating to their question.
  • Do not discuss salary. If asked, always express your sincere interest in the position and that you are open to considering their strongest offer.
  • When the interview ends offer to be available if additional information is needed and express your interest in moving to the next step
  • Let the employer know that you sincerely appreciate his or her time – be sure to end with a hand-shake

Following the Interview

  • Follow up the same or very next day with a hand-written thank-you card mailed to the person you interviewed with
  • If you have a strong rapport with anyone in the company, let them know that you have interviewed and would appreciate any recommendations they might be able to give
  • Personally call all of your references and let them know that you are interviewing so that they are not caught by surprise when the employer calls. This can be an awkward situation if the employer feels that your references aren’t strongly connected with you.
  • Based on next-steps that were outlined by the employer at the end of the interview a follow-up call may be warranted if you have passed the date that you were to hear back from the employer.

The reference points outlined above are the core basics to properly preparing for strong interview that will place you far ahead those who do not take the time to properly prepare.
